Dragonwilds Combat Guide — Power Level, Weaknesses and the Boss Ladder
Quick answer
Combat runs on three trainable styles (Attack, Magic, Ranged) that level from every fight — but your real defense is armour power level, not skill levels. Check a boss's weakness before you engage (the Titan wants crush or water), stock food, and climb the ladder PL 4 to PL 7.
Community report
Three styles, one rule
Attack, Magic and Ranged train themselves from every fight, and nothing stops you mixing them — the community's most common compliment is that the combat mix (melee into magic, mobility spells included) stands out in the survival genre.
The rule that decides fights, though, is power level: it comes entirely from the armour you wear. A higher-power-level opponent isn't a skill check, it's a gear gate — which is why the boss ladder and the gear tier ladder advance together.
Weaknesses win fights
Every charted enemy has damage-type weaknesses and some have outright immunities: the Black Knight Titan takes extra crush and water damage (don't rely on slash or stab), Imaru is immune to poison, burn and bleed, and dragons fall to water. Bring the matching damage type before you bring anything else.
Then bring the supplies: food is consumed by every attempt, antipoison is listed for the Velgar fight, and vault runs chain enough combat that the same packing discipline applies.
The endgame ladder
The world boss ladder caps at Fuzan (Power Level 7) — and beating him opens the Fight Caves at The Burning Spire: thirty waves of combat with Fuzan waiting at the end. Mini bosses and vault guardians fill the ladder gaps and drop the shards that weapon recipes demand.
FAQ
- How does combat work in Dragonwilds?
- Three trainable styles — Attack, Magic, Ranged — level from every fight. Damage-type weaknesses matter (crush, slash, water and more), and armour power level is the gate that decides which fights you survive.
- What is the best weapon in Dragonwilds?
- The one that matches the enemy's weakness and your power-level tier — there's no universal best. The Iron Sword chain (8 bars, 4 hard leather, 1 wool thread, 4 vault shards) is the melee template every tier repeats.
- Is Magic good in Dragonwilds?
- It's the most-discussed system in the game's reviews, praised as part of what sets the combat apart. It runs on runes from your own mining routes and has a dedicated cloth armour line.
