Dragonwilds Magic Guide — Spellbook, Runes and Spell Unlocks
Quick answer
Magic runs on runes: unlock your Spellbook in the tutorial (from Zanik) or by leveling a skill, drag spells into the Spell Wheel (Q), and cast — each spell consumes specific runes made from Rune Essence at a Rune Altar. New spells unlock as their skills level up.

Unlocking and casting
You get your Spellbook one of two ways: Zanik hands it over during the tutorial, or your first spell unlocks by leveling a skill such as Woodcutting. Open it with P — locked and unlocked spells sit on the left, with cast details and cooldowns on hover.
Casting is a two-step: drag a spell into an open slot on the Spell Wheel, then hit Q in the field and click the spell you want. Every cast consumes the required number of runes.
The Rune economy
Runes are Magic’s ammunition — gathered Rune Essence converts at a Rune Altar, which makes Runecrafting self-sufficient from your own mining routes. Rune Essence is a mining byproduct, so mage builds are really mining builds in disguise.
Traversal is part of the kit: the Agility rework (0.12.1) added the Windstep spell, and horizontal dashes and fall rolls pair with mobility magic across Ashenfall’s regions.
Why Magic is worth the setup
Magic is the single most-talked-about system in the game’s Steam reviews — praised as part of a combat mix that stands out in the survival genre. The Armour Bench crafts magic-line armour (the cloth tiers: padded, fine, mystic, infinity), so a mage build plans cloth runs the way melee plans ore.
Unlock levels for each spell live in the Skill Tree (K) — hover any milestone to see what it grants before you commit a route.
